This course encourages participants to reflect on the way historical approaches to English language teaching influence contemporary approaches. It helps participants develop a better understanding of the methods and approaches underlying the materials they use in class, enabling them to make decisions about the way they use those materials. The course does not provide a full historical survey of approaches and methods and many are not mentioned (e.g.Task-Based Learning, the Lexical Approach). Instead, it focuses on two specific approaches which relate directly to modern communicative language teaching (the Direct Method and Audiolingualism).
Although the history of English language teaching can be (and often is) described as a succession of different methods and approaches, it is clear that methods do not simply appear and disappear. Teachers are often aware of particular methods but tend to take elements of these to suit their own particular needs, rather than adopt them entirely.
